Faizel Ismail is currently the Head of the South African Delegation to the World Trade Organization based in Geneva.
He joined the new democratic government of South Africa in 1994 as it began its transition to re-integrate with the world economy and led South Africa’s trade negotiations with the European Union, the Southern African Development Community, the Southern African Customs Union, with a number of bilateral trading partners, and the WTO. He joined South Africa’s Mission to Geneva in May 2002. He has written numerous articles on trade and development, and published a book titled: Mainstreaming Development in the World Trade Organization. He holds an MPhil degree in Development Studies from the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Arts and LLB degrees from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. He is an associate editor of the Journal of World Trade.
