Lucian Cernat, Chief Economist, DG Trade, European Commission

Before Lucian Cernat works as Chief Economist at European Commission, he was Economic Affairs Officer with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Prior to joining UNCTAD, he was for several years a trade diplomat with the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, University Assistant at Georgia State University, and Yale-CEP Eastern Scholar at University of Bucharest. His main areas of research include trade and competition policies, institutional transformation, and EU enlargement.

He co-edited Competition, Competitiveness and Development: Lessons from Developing
Countries (United Nations: New York and Geneva, 2004), and Competition Provisions in
Regional Trade Agreements: How to Assure Development Gains (United Nations: New York and Geneva, 2005). He is the author of Europeanization, Varieties of Capitalism and Economic Performance in Central and Eastern Europe (Palgrave Macmillan, 2006).

Other recent publications include two book chapters in B. Guha-Khasnobis (ed.) The WTO, Developing Countries and the Doha Development Agenda: Prospects and Challenges for Trade-led Growth (Palgrave Macmillan, 2004) and in Z. Drabek (ed.) Can Regional Integration Arrangements Enforce Trade Disciplines (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005), and articles in refereed journals such as Journal of World Investment, Comparative Economic Studies, Journal of European Public Policy, Global Economy Quarterly, Journal for Institutional Innovation, Development, and Transition, Journal of Economic Cooperation.
