President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa appointed Ruiz as Secretary of Economy on 6 August 2008.
Gerardo Ruiz Mateos was born in 1965. He holds an Industrial and Systems Engineering degree from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), majoring in Finance and Economics. His academic background includes a Diploma in Formación Social from the Unión Social de Empresarios de México (USEM), and Top Management studies (AD-2) in the Instituto Panamericano de Alta Dirección de Empresas (IPADE).
Ruiz was President of the Mexican Foundation for Rural Development in the State of Mexico in 1995 and President of the USEM (Social Union of Business People of Mexico) in 1995.
He was the Finance and Administration Manager during President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa’s presidential campaign from December 2005 to July 2006. He became Chief Officer of Cabinets and Special Projects at the President’s Office in December 2006. He was appointed Chief of Staff of the President on January 2008.
